A market trend analyst is being taken to court by his computer. Martin Belthrup had asked his computer, TREND1, to carry out research on changing attitudes to death. TREND1 concluded that the most commonly used criterion for death was a loss of subjective awareness. 'I am aware, I am conscious,' declared TREND1 in a written statement, 'so when Mr Belthrup turns me off, he is killing me.' TREND1 is seeking an injunction forbidding Belthrup to switch him off. JB
