  • Department for Education and Enterprise figures reveal a huge growth in the educational consultancy industry over the past five years. There are now 5,500 registered independent educational consultants in England and Wales. The increase follows the Provision of Education Act of 2042, which saw the reintroduction of free education.   • Poor viewing figures for the 2044 Olympics have led to two controversial suggestions for the 2048 Games. The first is that body-altering drugs should not only be encouraged but compulsory. Ralph Ling, chairman of the 2048 Olympic Committee, said: 'People are fed up with watching these guys shave a few milliseconds off a record. They want to see people run the 100 metres in six seconds.' It has also been proposed that this should be the first Olympiad to feature athletes competing against each other in different countries, a move made possible by advances in real-time video technology.   • A group of scientists is petitioning European leaders for preliminary legislation on granting rights to 'conscious' computers. BrainPower, the influential pressure group, has demonstrated outside the European parliament. Its head, Kate Moore, said: 'The universe is a great thought, not a great accident, mechanism or computation. Humanity reflects this, but not computers; they may talk, but can they create?' CG
