  • The dodo has become extinct - for the second time. In his will, Wiltshire landowner Leslie Fawcett revealed he had bred several of the cumbersome birds in secret on his estate 30 years ago. He used DNA snatched from a museum exhibit which he then implanted into denucleated ostrich eggs. He managed to produce a breeding pair, but their eggs never hatched. Evidence of his enterprise has been donated to the Natural History Museum. CG

  • The teenage craze for tooth-painting is being welcomed by dental experts, if not by parents. The company that launched the tooth-cleaning drink Snapper Clene has now brought out Snapper Film, a paint-on, peel-off product designed to protect teeth from staining by food and drink. After drinking blackcurrant, say, or red wine, simply peel off the protective film. That it now comes in vivid shades has turned it into a style essential for many young people. RD

  • Surface pods will now have two operating modes: they can be manually driven until they hit a superspeed highway; then they go into automode, to be guided magnetically to preset destinations. Entrances and exits to superspeed highways are automatic. All drivers will be tested for drinking and tiredness before they drive onto non-automatic roads, known as 'snail sectors'. CS
