Drought in Africa is affecting more than 300m people, with only South Africa and Congo getting anything like enough rain to sustain food production. It has come on top of 20 years of changing rainfall patterns, brought on by global warming and causing a 'drying out' of much of the tropics. As many as 17m people may die as a result of the failure of much of this year's harvest. Crop losses have been made worse by the genetic breakdown of some of the drought-resistant maize and bean varieties that were developed in the early 2020s. PR
