  • Eurobridge, Britain's second fixed link to the Continent, has opened. The road-rail bridge accommodates eight traffic lanes and four rail links. The facility, which was built in just 48 months, incorporates one lane in either direction for cars equipped with European-standard automatic pilots. It will now be possible to drive from Dover to Paris and beyond without even remaining awake. JM

  • International police have been cracking down on dealers in Morph, the illegal drug of choice in most parts of eastern Europe for the past three years. A mind-altering drug which increases the ability to mirror others' behaviour, Morph is used by those who want to increase their powers of persuasion or seduction. Police have arrested 240 people in one of the largest sting operations mounted since the arrest of the eco-terrorist Warren Peace six years ago. The drug is popular in certain no-go areas of New York; city police say they are powerless to eliminate supplies. DJ

  • Sunglasses could be going out of fashion. Solar, one of the four biggest manufacturers of eyewear, is phasing out traditional sunglasses. Instead it is putting development money into Tiny Eyes, disposable photochromic contact lenses that darken according to how bright the light is. By summer 2017 Solar hopes to
