Russia's President Kakoshin has pulled off a remarkable deal with Japan and China for a huge joint investment programme in Siberia. This will provide both countries with most of their energy and mineral needs for 30 years. The investment will transform Russia east of the Urals, revitalising it after the nuclear civil war of 10 years ago. They all thought the great racehorse Shergar had been kidnapped and killed by the IRA in the 1980s. But it seems he was smuggled out of Ireland and taken to Japan. 'The boom in the Japanese bloodstock industry stems from the stallion Ochiyama, who died five years ago,' says Tom Mulholland of the British Bloodstock Board. 'Ochiyama was a brilliant sire, producing many more winners than his breeding suggested he would. It made us suspicious, and genetic tests at our London laboratory prove that old Ochiyama was in fact Shergar.' DW
