  • Lingua/04, the new voice-driven software, threatens to replace Windows as the standard operating system in the 2010s. It claims to be versatile over more than 100 languages, and to be able to process natural language in real time. Lingua/04-compatible computers use a pinhead audio sensor rather than a keyboard or scratch pad, resulting in much smaller computer-driven devices. JM

  • Hangovers will soon be history with the launch of the ClearHead pill. A combination of artichoke and milk thistle (to detoxify the liver), Japanese coral (to neutralise acidity) and a homeopathic dose of strychnine (to stop nausea), it slows down the progress of alcohol through the body, giving the brain time to rehydrate. One pill should be taken before drinking, at bedtime and in the morning. SC

  • Green John, Red Roses is the year's unexpected bestseller. The book, a stream-of-consciousness account of how John Prescott, the former deputy leader of the Labour party, adjusted to life out of office abandoning fast cars and fast food for a life of meditation is seen as marking the final demise of old Labour. The slimmed-down, non-smiling Prescott is also the first British man to grace the cover of fashion bible Vogue. CG
